Let Me Introduce You To James

Back to Message Archive

Tonight we have the joy of kicking off a new series. We have been walking through the book of Acts for the past 5 months and with a natural break in the text that comes between chapters 20 and 21 it felt like the right time to take a break. As your pastors we want to provide a balanced diet of the Scriptures to you as best we can and considering we have spent the past 5 months in Acts and the previous 5 months before that in Old Testament stories, and the better part of 5 months before that in Acts we thought it would be good to break away from the narrative portions of Scripture and dive into an epistle and provided more direct teaching.

So tonight we are kicking off a study of the book of James. As we kick off this study tonight I want to simply take some time to introduce the book of James to you so we will be looking at the first verse of the letter and considering…

  • Who was James? I want us to know the author of this letter. I want us to know his story and the background behind the men that penned these words.
  • Who was James writing to? Who is the audience? This is always a critical question when studying a passage of Scripture as it helps shape the context of what the author is addressing.
  • What are some of the Challenges of Studying this Book? This letter is very different than letters that Paul, Peter, or John wrote so we let’s be aware of the challenges that are ahead and think through them at a high level.
