President's Day

Some people call it President’s Day. Some call it Washington’s Birthday. Still others call it Washington and Lincoln Day. Regardless of what you call it, most would agree that it’s a day to honor those who have led our great country.

I have always been fascinated by the presidency. It’s amazing to consider how much power and responsibility is entrusted to one person. The president has the ability to make decisions that will effect a generation, and impact generations to come. The president’s word can move armies. The president’s word can change the plans of world leaders and it can change the economic climate of the nation. The president’s word can save lives and it can cost people their lives. The president has the ability to make life easier and he has the ability to make life much harder. To be the president is to be one of the most powerful men in the world. It is a position of great honor and it demands great respect.

The Bible is clear that as Christians we are supposed to honor the one who holds this office. We are called to submit to all of those who have been given authority over us (see Romans 13:1-7; 1 Peter 2:13-17). It is our responsibility to obey and to respect those who lead our country.

The presidency is a powerful and prestigious office, however as Christians we must never become so impressed by the presidency that we forget that there is someone who is much greater. We must remember that we have a relationship with someone who is more powerful and more awesome than any president or world leader. We have a relationship with God Himself. By His Word the world was created and by His Word the earth is sustained. By His Word kings come into power and by His Word the nations will fall. He is the one who gives life and He is the one who has conquered death.

The Lord has appointed our leaders and He has called us to honor and submit to them, but I pray that we will always remember that He is the one who deserves the greatest honor and the greatest respect. He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords, the maker and ruler of heaven and earth. I hope that today you will thank God for our president and for those who have gone before him. Praise God that we live in country that is free and that it has been led by men who fear Him. But more than anything, I pray that you will devote your life to honoring and praising the one who is over all things and all people. He will reign forever. To Him be glory forever.

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their hosts. He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of his  heart to all generations.

Psalm 33:6-11

Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm! God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne. The princes of the peoples gather as the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; he is highly exalted!

 Psalm 47:6-9

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
